Diocese of Mount Kilimanjaro

First mission station in the area [of current Diocese of Mount Kilimanjaro] opened at Moshi, on the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, by Bishop James Hannington, just a few weeks before he was martyred by the Kabaka of Buganda. The Anglican Church was planted in the area due to the work of the Church Missionary Society.

Originally there was a vast Diocese of Eastern Equatorial Africa, established during the time of ‘the scramble for Africa’. Later, it was divided up, and this area became part of the Diocese of Mombasa.
