Title: Taking the Flak - TV series
Post by: nTZ on 07 July, 2009, 13:06
This series starts in the UK (BBC2) on Wednesday July 8, 2009.

You can Google for "Taking the Flak" and find out quite a bit, but the best report was in the Arusha Times Issue 00558, March 14 - 20, 2009.

http://www.arushatimes.co.tz/2009/10/society_6.htm

Apparently "Part 1 of the sitcom was filmed in Nakuru in early 2007 but when a real civil war broke out in Kenya following the country's General Elections the following December, the shooting had to be shifted to Tanzania.

Arusha was chosen as the alternative location being only 4 hours drive from Nairobi, almost the same distance from the Kenyan Capital to Nakuru. Parts 2 -7 were thus filmed here."

'Taking the flak' eventually covered more than 20 locations of Arusha.

See how many you can spot.

Some reviews

The Telegraph  (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/5797350/TV-review-Taking-the-Flak.html) doesn't like it

But John Simpson (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/5780196/TV-review-John-Simpson-on-Taking-the-Flak.html) was kinder.

The Independent (http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/features/taking-the-flak--the-joy-of-foreign-parts-1729352.html) thinks it a bit of a Beeb "love-in".

The Times (http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_radio/article6626679.ece) has a piece by the producer.

The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2009/jul/09/getting-on) certainly didn't like it.

But best to look at their Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/TAKING-THE-FLAK/95320449820), with lots of location shots in the photo album.
